Group 7 halogens Flashcards
What happens when halogens react?
They gain 1 electron to get a full outer shell, by gaining 1 electron they form a negative ion
How are halogens structured in their elemental form?
diatomic molecules
What halogen is a pale green gas at room temp?
Chlorine
What halogen is a dark grey solid at room temp?
iodine
What halogen is a brown liquid at room temp?
Bromine
What are spectator ions?
ions that do not change during a reaction
What is the general formula for the reaction between a halogen and a metal?
metal + halogen = metal halide
What happens in reactions between halogens and metals?
-metal halides are formed
-ionic compounds are formed
-solids are formed
-more reactive halogens will react more violently
Why do halogens become less reactive as you go down the group?
-atomic radius and shielding increase
-this means there is a weaker electrostatic attraction between the nucleus and and the electron it is trying to gain
-this means there is more energy required for a reaction to occur.
