Group 1 metals pt 2 Flashcards
What is the electron configuration of Lithium (Li) ?
2,1
What is the electron configuration of sodium (Na)?
2,8,1
What is the electron configuration of potassium (K)
2,8,8,1
What happens when lithium reacts with oxygen?
It burns with a red flame and forms white lithium oxide
What happens when lithium reacts with water?
Lithium floats on the surface and releases bubbles of hydrogen gas, it reacts vigorously
What happens when potassium reacts with water?
The metal floats on surface and then burns with lilac flame
What happens when sodium reacts with water?
The sodium floats on the surface of the water and releases enough heat to melt the sodium into a ball, the sodium moves quickly across the water.
What happens when metals react with water?
They form metal hydroxides and hydrogen gas
What happens as you go down group 1?
-attraction between positive nucleus and negative outer electrons becomes weaker so electrons are lost more easily and atoms gain more electron shells.
-reactions become quicker and more vigorous
