Group 7 Elements Flashcards
What are the elements in group 7
Fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, astatine
What is group 7 call
Halogens
What is the valence electron of group 7
7 electron shell in the valence shell
Appearance of Halogens
Fluorine = Pale yellow gas
Bromine=Red brown liquid
Iodine=crystal shiny grey
Chlorine= yellow green
Matters of group 7 elements
fluorine and chlorine are gases, bromine is a liquid, and iodine and astatine are solids.
The properties of group 7 elements
As you go down the group:
Reactivity decreases boiling/melting point increases
The density increases.
They are poor conductors of heat
Hazard of halogens
They are very highly reactive can be very harmful to organisms
Fluorine is the most reactive element, it is a corrosive and highly toxic gas. Chlorine gas is very toxic, low concentrations can cause eye irritation and affect throat and lung to be in pain. Bromine is a very corrosive oxidizing liquid, vapor attacks eye and lung with painful effects. Iodine is toxic , vapor irritates eye and lung.
Halogens displacement reaction
A more reactive halogen can displace a less reactive halogen from a solution of one of its salts. Example; when chlorine is added to sodium bromide solution, chlorine takes the place of bromine because chlorine is more reactive than bromine, chlorine displace bromine from the sodium bromide. -
