Q

Describe the trend in physical properties going down the group (including colour and state/melting point.)

A

As you go down the group, the state changes from gas to liquid to solid, and the melting point gets higher. The colour also gets darker.

Q

What happens to chlorine when it reacts with iron?

A

To get the reaction started, all that was needed was a ‘lick of flame’ from the bunsen burner and then the chlorine gas set the iron alight with bright orange flames in the test tube

Q

What happens to bromine when it reacts with iron?

A

After some heat from the bunsen burner, there is a clear reaction. The bromine immediately vaporises and travels up the tube. When it comes into contact with iron, the iron goes red hot. and produces a gas.

Q

What happens to iodine when it reacts with iron?

A

After lots of heating from the bunsen burner, the iodine turns into a gas and coats the iron in a reddish brown iron iodide.

Q

What is a halide?

A

A group 7 compound. The halide is not the whole compound- it is the halogen section of it, a.k.a the ion of a halogen.

e.g. in Sodium Fluoride, Fluoride is the halide. However, Fluorine is the halogen.
