Group 1 metals Flashcards
What is another name for the group 1 metals?
The alkali metals
Describe the trend in physical properties going down the group (including density and hardness).
As you go down the group, the metals get softer and the density increases.
Describe the trend in reactivity going down the group.
They get more reactive as you go down the group.
What happens to Lithium when it reacts with water?
Try to get at least 3 things! (there are 4 in total)
- It fizzed/gas was produced/bubbling
- It moved around on the water
- It floated on the surface of the water (meaning that it is less dense than water)
- It dissolved
What happens to Potassium when it reacts with water?
- It fizzed/gas was produced/bubbling
- It moved around on the water (more like shot around the water)
- It floated on the surface of the water (meaning that it is less dense than water)
- It dissolved
- It set on fire (red/purple flames)
What happens to Sodium when it reacts with water?
Try to get at least 3 things! (there are 5 in total)
- It fizzed/gas was produced/bubbling
- It moved around on the water
- It floated on the surface of the water (meaning that it is less dense than water)
- It turned into a ball
- It dissolved
What are the word and symbol equations for Lithium/Sodium/Potassium?
Lithium/Sodium/Potassium + Water –> Lithium/Sodium/Potassium Hydroxide + Hydrogen
Li/Na/K + H2O –> LiHO/NaHO/KHO + H2
