group 7 and 0 Flashcards
what are group 7 elements referred to as
halogens
what are the properties of the halogens
they are diatomic so they pair up w eachother ( I2 Cl2 etc)
they are toxic ( iodine is an antiseptic, chlorine kills bacteria in swimming pools)
they are brittle when soild
they are colourful
they melt and boil easily
what is the trend in boiling point in group 7
it’s increases as we go down therefore fluorine has the lowest melting and boiling points and astatine has the highest melting and boiling points
which experiment do we do to see the pattern in reactivity in group 7
reaction with iron wool
what happens when chlorine reacts with iron
hot iron reacts quickly, chlorine gas burns up and forms brown iron chloride
how does solid iodine react with iron wool
iron hardly reacts with the iodine despite being heated strongly, because it is lower down in the group
what happens when group 7 element reacts with group 1 metals
they react quickly, producing a metal halide as a white powder, like how sodium reacts with chlorine gas di make salt ( sodium chloride)
what is a displacement reaction
getting events to fight with one another for a metal ion
how can you test to find the identity of chloride, bromide and iodide ions and what’s the result
using silver nitrate solution, it will give a precipitate (insoluble solid) and the colour reveals which ion
what colour does the chloride ions turn if if they are present in silver nitrate experiment
white
what colour does bromide ions turn in silver nitrate experiment
cream colour précipitate
what colour does iodide ions go in silver nitrate solution experiment
yellow precipitate
what is group 0 also called
the noble gases
what is group 0 also called
the noble gases
what is the reactivity of group 0
very interactive because they have a full outer shell of electrons
