group 7 Flashcards
What happens to reactivity going down the group and why
It decreases, gets less reactive because as you go down the group the outermost shell gets further and further away from the nucleus, so the nucleus has a weaker pull when attracting electrons
what happens to the boiling points as you go down the group
Melting and boiling points increase
What is a halide
When a halogen gains an electron to form a 1- ion, we call it a halide
What are three properties of noble gases
inert, colourless, non-flammable
Why are group 0 inert
They all have full outer shells of electrons, so they don’t react with anything
As you go down group 0 what happens to their boiling point
Increases
What colour is bromine water
orange
What colour is iodine water
brown
What colour is chlorine water
colourless
What colour is fluorine at room temperature
It is a yellow gas
What colour is chlorine at room temperature
It is a green coloured gas
What colour is bromine at room temperature
a brown- red coloured volatile liquid which is actually poisonous
What colour is iodine at room temperature
Grey solid with purple vapour
The halogens exist as what molecules
diatomic ( each molecule has two atoms)
