group 7 Flashcards
what are elements in group 7 known as
Halogens
how do halogens exist
the exist is diatomic molecules that are covalently bonded
What is the pattern as you go down group 7
Boiling points increase
describe how chlorine is at room temperature
it’s a yellow green gas
what do bromine look like at room temperature
a poisonous red brown liquids which gives off an orange vapour
what does iodine look like in room temperature
a dock grey solid which gives off purple vapor when heated
what is the test for chlorine
chlorine bleaches damp blue litmus paper turning it white (if it’s an acid it will turn red first)
why does reactivity decrease going down group 7
- only needs one electron so have a stable electronic structure
- as you go down the road it gets harder to track the electron because the shows are further away from the nucleus
who is the order of halogen reactivity
- Fluorine
- Chlorine
- Bromine
- Iodine
what do halogens react with metals to form
metal halides
