Group 7 Flashcards
fluorine
Fluorine is critical for the production of nuclear material for nuclear power plants and for the insulation of electric towers.
chlorine
is most important use is as a bleach in the manufacture of paper and cloth, but it is also used to make pesticides (insect killers), rubber, and solvents.
bromine
Products containing bromine are used in agriculture and sanitation and as fire retardants (chemicals that help prevent things from catching fire).
iodine
The body needs iodine to make thyroid hormones. These hormones control the body’s metabolism and many other important functions.
astatine
Hence it is used for treating diseases related to the thyroid.
What do group 7 halogens have in common?
Atoms of group 7 elements all have seven electrons in their outer shell. This means that the halogens all have similar chemical properties .
What is special about halogens?
Halogens are unique because they have seven valence electrons which makes them very reactive. The outer shell needs to have eight electrons to be non-reactive and stable.
