He stayed at the Victoria Hotel and wrote to
his friend, describing
Hong Kong as “a small but very clean city”

On February 18th, Rizal, accompanied by Basa, boarded
the ferry steamer for Macao, a Portuguese
colony.
Kiu-Kiang-
He was surprised to encounter a familiar figure among
the passengers:, a Spanish spy who had been tasked with monitoring Rizal’s movements
Sainz de Varanda-
-In Macao, Rizal and Basa stayed at the home of, a Filipino gentleman married to a
Portuguese woman.

Rizal had reasons why he chose to live in London;
- he wanted to enhance his knowledge on the
English language; - he sought to have further study on Antonio
Morga’s Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas; - to do research on the Philippine history; and
- to continue to write for La Solidaridad in defense
of his people against the Spanish tyranny.
Earlier in September 1888, Rizal went to
Paris to continue his research on the
Philippine history in the
