1
Q
What are they also known as?
A
Alkaline earth metals

Q
Experiment for magnesium and calcium with water:
A
- Test tube half full of water, add the calcium (do NOT touch).
- Hold an empty test-tube over the first test tube, to collect any gas produced.
- After 1 min, test gas in top test tube with lighted splint. (Squeaky-pop test)
- Add 5 drops of UI into lower test tube.
- Repeat with magnesium, record results.
3
Q
What does the squeaky-pop experiment test for?
A
Hydrogen
4
Q
Calcium observations and results:
A
- had a big temperature change from cold 🥶 to hot 🥵
- effervescence
- testing gas produced: hydrogen makes a squeaky pop as the flame goes out
- alkali (PH12)
5
Q
Magnesium observations and results:
A
- a colourless solution and nothing happened
- (testing of gas produced): no hydrogen present
- neutral (PH7)
