Group 1, Metals Flashcards
What are they also known as?
Alkali metals
The group 1 metals (+symbols) are:
- Lithium (Li)
- Sodium (Na)
- Potassium (K)
- Rubidium (Rb)
- Caesium (Cs)
- Francium (Fr)
What are the appearances of Lithium, Sodium and Potassium?
They are all shiny and silver.
Which of the first three metals is the hardest and the softest?
- Lithium (hardest)
- Sodium
- Potassium (softest)
Reaction of Lithium with water and then universal indicator (UI):
- gas made
- effervescence
- smoke
- it dissolved
- UI : dark purple, alkali
Reaction of Sodium with water and then universal indicator (UI):
- gas
- small spark (orange)
- effervescence
- it dissolved
- UI : blue/purple, alkali (not as strong as Lithium)
Reaction of Potassium with water and then universal indicator (UI):
- gas
- fizzing sound
- caught fire (magenta)
- pop/explosion at the end
- UI : Blue/purple, alkali (not as strong as sodium)
What are the metals stored in and why?
OIL, to stop them reacting with the water and the air.
Which of the following is the most reactive:
Lithium, Sodium and Potassium?
- Potassium (most reactive)
- Sodium
- Lithium (least reactive)
Lithium and water word equation:
Lithium ➕water ▶️ lithium hydroxide ➕hydrogen
Sodium and water word equation:
Sodium ➕water ▶️ sodium hydroxide ➕hydrogen
Potassium and water word equation:
Potassium ➕water ▶️ potassium hydroxide ➕hydrogen
Why are they called alkali metals?
Because when dissolved in water and reacted with UI the liquid turns purple which is alkali
/
They form alkali solutions when reacted with water
What are the trends as you go down the group 1 metals?
They get more reactive.
They are easier to cut/softer.
