Group 2 metals Flashcards
What happens when you add water to a group 2 metal?
It forms a metal hydroxide + H2
e.g Mg(OH)2 + H2
What happens when you add steam to a group 2 metal?
It forms a metal oxide + H2
e.g MgO + H2
How can you test for sulphates (SO4)?
add HCL and BaCl2
a white precipitate of BaSO4 should have been produced
How does solubility of a group 2 hydroxide/sulphate vary going down the group?
Hydroxides increases in solubility going down the group.
Sulphates decreases in solubility going down the group.
What is Mg(OH)2, BaSO4 and Ca(OH)2 used for?
Mg(OH)2 = antacid (acid reflux)
BaSO4 = barium meal for x-rays
Ca(OH)2 = slaked lime neutralise acidic soil
What metal is used in the extraction of titanium from titanium chloride and how?
Magnesium.
TiCl4 + 2Mg —> 2MgCl2 + Ti
What is used in flue gas removal and how?
Calcium oxide.
CaO + 2H20 + SO2 —-> CaSO3 + 2H20
