Energetics Flashcards
How do you calculate overall enthalpy change (ΔH)?
ΔH= energy to break bonds (+ve) + energy to make bonds (-ve)
What is the standard condition?
100kPa and 298k
Define enthalpy of formation
The enthalpy change when one mole of a substance is produced from its elements under standard conditions.
Define enthalpy of combustion
The enthalpy change when one mole of a substance is burned completely in oxygen under standard conditions
Define specific heat capacity
the energy required to raise 1kg of substance by 1 degree
What is the equation for specific heat capacity and how can we use this to calculate enthalpy change?
q=mcΔT
ΔH= q/moles
Define hess’s law
The overall enthalpy change for a reaction is the same regardless of the route taken.
Bond enthalpy data is an averaged value representing what?
The energy required to break one mole of the stated bond in a gaseous state, under standard conditions
