24
Q

Does the solubility of group 2 sulfates increase or decrease down the group?

25
State the uses of group 2 and explain what it involves?
Extraction of Ti: -titanium is a strong, low density metal that is used in the aerospace industry and replacement hip joints. -It is difficult to extract , normally metals are extracted by reduction with carbon HOWEVER this method produces carbide which is very brittle so titanium oxide is reacted with chlorine and carbon and so the product titanium chloride is reduced with magnesium so we can get pure titanium. Milk of Magnesia: -Mg(OH)2 is an indigestion remedy -It also neutralises stomach acid Barium Sulfate: -insoluble (toxic but safe due to its insolubility) -Barium meal outlines the gut in medical x-rays Calcium hydroxide: -Slaked lime which treats acidic soil
