Group 2 Flashcards
What is the equation for a reaction with oxygen
2Ca + O2 –> 2CaO
What are the flame colours of Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba
White, Brick Red, Crimson, Apple Green
What are the reactions with water?
Mg + H2O(g) –> MgO + H2
Magnesium doesn’t do the following reaction because Mg(OH)2 is insoluble and it forms a waterproof coating around the Mg
Ca + 2H2O(l) –> Ca(OH)2 + H2
What are some uses of group II metals
Ca(OH)2 can be used for neutralising acidic soil. Mg(OH)2 and CaCO3 can be used as antacids in treating indigestion.
Reactions of Group II oxides with water
CaO + H2O –> Ca(OH)2
The trend of solubility of Group II hydroxides
As you go down the group, the hydroxides become more soluble and so more alkaline.
