Group 1 Elements Flashcards
1
Q
What are group 1 elements known as?
A
Alkali metals
2
Q
What are the alkali metals?
A
- Lithium
- Sodium
- Potassium
- Rubidium
- Caesium
- Francium
3
Q
What do all of the alkali metals have in common?
A
They all have one electron in their outer shell, making them very reactive and gives them similar properties
4
Q
What are the alkali metals’ physical properties?
A
- Soft
- Low density
5
Q
What are the trends for the alkali metals as the go down in the groups?
A
- Increasing reactivity, the outer electron is more easily lost the further down the groups
- Lower melting/boiling points
- Higher relative atomic mass
6
Q
What do alkali metals form with non-metals?
A
Ionic compounds
7
Q
How do alkali metals react with water?
A
- The amount of energy given out increases as you go down the group
- Produces a hydrogen gas and metal hydroxide (salts that dissolve to alkane solutions)
- The more reactive, the more violent the reaction
8
Q
How do alkali metals react with chlorine?
A
- High reaction in a heated chlorine gas, forming white metal chloride salts
- Reactivity increases as you go down the group
9
Q
How do alkali metals react with oxygen?
A
- React to form a metal oxide
- Different types of oxides will form depending on the different alkali metal used
