Elements Flashcards
What is an element?
A substrate made up of atoms that all have the same number of protons in their nucleus
What are atoms of each element represented by?
Chemical symbols
What is a diatomic element?
Elements that consist of 2 similar atoms covalently bonded together in its natural state
What are the 8 diatomic elements?
- Hydrogen
- Nitrogen
- Oxygen
- Fluorine
- Chlorine
- Bromine
- Iodine
- Astatine
What is an isotope?
Different forms of an element with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
What do isotopes use instead of a mass number?
Relative atomic mass number
How do you calculate realtive atomic mass?
( isotope isotope mass )
sum of (abundance x number )
————————————————————–
sum of abundance of all isotopes
