Group 1 - Alkali Metals Flashcards
What happens to the reactivity as you go down Group 1 and why?
It increases because it the force of attraction gets weaker between the outer electron and the nucleus. This then makes it easier to lose an electron.
What happens to the melting/boiling point as you go down Group 1 and why?
It decreases because as the atoms get bigger it is easy to break the negative charge holding them together.
What type of bond do Alkali metals form with group 7 gases? Describe this bond.
Ionic bond it is when the alkali metal gives a valence shell electron to the halogen and they are then both negatively and positively charged thus then being attracted electrostatically.
What does Lithium + oxygen make?
Lithium oxide
What does Sodium and Oxygen make?
Sodium oxide (Na20) or Sodium Peroxide (Na2O2)
What does Potassium and Oxygen make?
Potassium Peroxide (K2O2) or Potassium Superoxide (KO2)
