Enyzmes Flashcards
What are enzymes and give one example of their job?
They are proteins, made by the nucleus, and act as a biological catalyst.
How are enzymes used in the body?
They are used for almost all chemical reactions in the body. This including the breaking down of larger molecules into smaller, more soluble molecules.
What is the lock and key model?
The shape of the active site on the enzyme is complementary to the shape of the substrate. Enzymes are not used up and speed up the rate of reaction; often referred to as ‘biological catalysts’.
What is the enzyme for the substrate carbohydrates?
Carbohydrase is then turned into simple sugars (glucose)
What is the enzyme for the substrate starch?
Amylase is then turned into simple sugar (glucose).
What is the enzyme for the substrate protein?
Protease is then turned into amino acids.
What is the enzyme for the substrate fat(lipids)?
Lipase is then turned into glycerol and fatty acids.
What are some factors affecting enzyme activity?
Optimum pH and Temperature.
