Group 1 + 7 Of Periodic Table Flashcards
What are group 1 elements?
Alkali metals
Where are group one metals placed?
In the left hand side vertical column in the periodic table
Are group 1 metals very reactive or very interactive?
Very reactive
Why are group one metals reactive?
They react with water, so they have to be kept in oil, this is why they are called alkali metals
Which chemical is given of when a group one metal is reacted with water? And what is produced?
Hydrogen gas, and metal hydroxide
What happens when lithium is added to water?
It floats, fizzes , becomes smaller then disappears
What is an example equation for what happens when an group one metal reacts with water
lithium + water → lithium hydroxide + hydrogen
2Li(s) + 2H2O(l) → 2LiOH(aq) + H2(g)
What is the pattern of reactivity In group 1
The more shells the more reactive (as you go down they get more reactive)
What happens to the attraction between the nucleus of the atom and the electrons
The more shells the seeker the outer electron is
What are group 7 elements?
Halogens
Where is group 7 on the periodic table?
On the second column from the right
What are the three common elements in group 7?
Chlorine, bromine, iodine
What does the term halogen mean?
Salt former
Properties of iodine, bromine, chlorine
Iodine-Grey + solid, Sterilising wounds
Bromine-Orange + liquid, Making pesticides and plastics
Chlorine-Green + gas, Sterilising water
Trends in group 7 as you go down
The melting and boiling points then increase as you go down the group.
The halogens become darker as you go down the group
