How is the 42 protected from lightning?
- All parts bonded to high capacity Aluminium alloy tubes and strips
- Lightning discharge rod in vertical stabiliser
How is the 42 protected form static electricity?
7 static wicks
-Electrochemical paint under white paint to help conduct static electricity
What type of ailerons does the 42 have? What features?
- Differential ailerons
- Features an aerodynamic balance to reduce adverse yaw
Describe the failsafe design of the inboard and outboard flaps on the 42?
Inboard flap has tongue that fits into groove on outboard flap so if one does not deploy, the other will not
What are the flap speeds?
Approach: 137 kts
Landing: 111 kts
Describe the variable stop elevator
What happens when there is a throttle split?
- Electrically operated actuator limits up travel to 13˚ when power exceeds 25% or 14” MAP
- When power below 14” full 15.5˚ attainable
- Amber ‘stick limit’ indication when malfunction occurs
- No annunciation when one engine is above and the other is below 25% threshold
How is the elevator trim tab actuated?
left: long flexible cable adjustable by pilot
Right: Friction damper to prevent flutter if mechanical failure occurs
How is the rudder actuated? is there a mass balance?
Actuated by cables from pilot rudders. yes there is a mass balance
How is the rudder trim tab actuated?
By a flexible cable connected to the trim actuator assembly
Two operating rods connect cables to trim tab control horn
How is the landing gear powered? is it always pressurised?
Electric pump pressurises hydraulic system. System is always pressurised
How is each landing gear pivoted?
Mains: pivoted in centre wing box to fold inwards
Nose: pivoted to retract forwards
What components are there on the main gear? Think bogie undercarriage

What is the max steering deflection of the nose landing gear?

How does the nose wheel steering work?
- Connected to rudder pedals by steering linkage
- When weight on nose wheel steering can be obtained
- When no weight on nose gear, spring assembly allows the gear to centre so it can retract
How many WoW switches are there? Where are they all and what doe they all do?
10 total
Left: Up switch, down switch, WOW switch
Right: Up switch, down switch, Stall warning heat derater
Nose: Up switch, down switch x2, Pressure switch
What are the normal and emergency extension speeds for the landing gear? how long might emergency retraction take?
Normal: 194 kts
Emergency extension: 156 kts (up to 20 seconds)
What components are there in the hydraulic supply and control system?
- Reservoir
- Accumulator

Where are the hydraulic supply/ control components located?
- Rear aft cockpit bulkhead

To what pressures are the pressure regulating valve and pressure relief values set?
regulating valve: 1800psi

How does the pump pressure switch actuate? At what pressures?
Will turn pump on when pressure gets below 1400psi
Will turn pump off when pressure above 1650psi
Describe the differential pressure retraction of the landing gear system?
- Pressure form extend side of actuator is allowed to flow through solenoid valves to retract side ( to begin retraction due to different piston surface areas)
- When system detects low system pressure full pressure retraction will begin and retract the gear the remaining distance
What will happen to the gear if there is an electrical failure?
it will automatically extend
What do the lights of the landline gear indicator actually mean?
Green light: that gear is down and locked
Green light out: that gear is not down and locked
Red light: one or more landing gear is unsafe ( not fully up or fully down
When will a gear warning horn be heard?
- Both throttle levers are in low power (<14”MAP) and gear is selected up
- Landing flap is extended with gear retracted
Describe the brake system?
Exactly the same as DA40
What are the two engine models that the 42 has? ow much horsepower does each produce?
Lycoming
left: IO 360-M1A
right: LIO 360-M1A
Each produces 180HP
What is the full throttle time limit? What is the max continuous horsepower on each engine?
5 minutes with all engines
As required with one engine out

Where is the air intake for the engine, cylinder head cooling, alternator and cabin heat?
Right: Cylinder heat, cabin heat, altenator

What type of oil system is the DA42?
Wet sump
What is the max capacity (usable/unusable) of each fuel tank?
Aux tanks: 13.2 USG each usable (0.5 unusable)
Main tanks: 25 USG each usable (1 unusable per tank)
How is fuel quantity indicated on the whole fuel system? What about low fuel indications?
- Capacitance type probes in main outboard and inboard tanks (twilight from 16-18usg)
- No indicating in Aux tanks
- Float type sensor for low fuel cautions/warnings
How does the cross-feed work?
When selected on an engine, it will draw fuel from the opposite tank
What is the process for using fuel in the Aux tanks? Approximately what rate does the fuel move?
- When mains fuel reaches 15USG turn on transfer pump until mains tank indicates 25USG.
- Burn it back down to 15USG and transfer remaining Aux fuel into main tanks
- Rate around 1 USG per minute
What is the construction of the prop blades? Including coatings and protection
- Compressed wood root

- Increase oil pressure will move blades towards fine pitch
- If oil pressure decreases blades will move to coarse pitch
- If oil pressure lost spring will force blades into feathered position
Why is than an additional accumulator that is common in training aircraft but not others?
-Allows propeller to be unfeathered
What type and capacity battery does the 42 have? Where is it located?
24V 10 Ampere hour lead acid
