Gross Caries Flashcards
What tissue are you expected to preserve when removing caries from a tooth?
- Healthy and re-mineralizable tissue
Why do you want to achieve a restorative seal when placing a restoration?
- Want to seal in the caries and bacteria so there is no way of them surviving
Why do you want to maintain pulpal health when dealing with caries?
- As soon as the pulp is non-vital there is a poorer prognosis of the tooth
What are 4 examples of reasons behind caries formation?
- Not cleaning teeth properly
- Lots of sugar
- Medications
- Genetic predisposition
What are the 2 phases of restoring a tooth?
- Tissue removal
2. Restoration placement
What is self-cleansing in caries removal?
- Teach patient to have good OH e.g. good toothbrushing technique
- If patient does this properly then the caries will arrest
What is the process of partial caries removal? (4 points)
- Access cavity (you need to be able to see)
- Remove caries at periphery and ADJ
- Remove infected dentine (if you can)
- Maximize cavity for longevity
What is the process of stepwise caries removal? (4 points)
- Access cavity (you need to be able to see)
- Remove caries at periphery and ADJ
- Remove infected dentine (if you can)
- Maximise cavity for longevity
When can you place a direct pulp cap? (3 points)
When the pulp is:
- Vital
- Non-hyperaemic (no perfuse bleeding)
- No pain or transient (doesn’t last for a long time)
What are examples of materials that can be used for a direct pulp cap? (3 points)
- MTA
- RMGI
- CaOH
Why can materials such as Ledermix and Odontopaste not be used as direct pulp cap materials?
- These materials will kill the pulp
When may you want to carry out a pulpotomy? (3 points)
If you expose the pulp and it is:
- Vital
- Not hyperaemic
- No pain or transient
What would you place in the restoration at the firs stage of stepwise caries removal?
- RMGI
What would you do at stage 2 of the stepwise caries removal technique?
- 6 months later, re-enter, remove hardened dentine and restore the tooth
