Describe the Deep Fascia of the Foot

A

• Thin over dorsum of foot
o Continuous proximally with inferior extensor retinaculum
o Continuous laterally and posteriorly with plantar fascia
• Plantar fascia has thick central part
o Weaker medial and lateral parts

What is the Plantar Aponeurosis?

A

• Plantar aponeurosis
o Formed by thick central part of plantar fascia
o From calcaneus posteriorly to digits distally
 Forms 5 bands that become continuous with fibrous digital sheaths
o Intermuscular septa divide sole of foot into 3 compartments

What is the condition of Plantar Fasciitis and what causes it?

A

• Often caused by an overuse mechanism
o Running, high impact aerobics
o Wearing of inappropriate footwear
• Most common hindfoot problem in runner
• Inflammation of plantar fascia
• Causes pain on plantar surface of foot and heel
o Pain is most severe after sitting and when beginning to walk in the morning
o Usually dissipates after 5-10 minutes
o Often recurs following rest
• Point tenderness is located at proximal attachment
o Pain increases with extension of great toe
