Gross Anatomy Flashcards
Hypothalamus (function/shape)
Location: the diencephalon
Function: Critical regulator of hormonal and instinctual behaviors.

Thalamus (function/shape)
Location: Diencephalon,
Function: Relay station for sensory input to brain

Medulla
Location: Hindbrain
Function: Regulator of instinctual movements like breathing and heart rhythm regulation

Reticular formation
Location: Hindbrain
Function: Comprised of small nuclei that activate distinct parts of the forebrain. involved in multiple tasks such as regulating the sleep-wake cycle and filtering incoming stimuli to discriminate irrelevant background stimuli.[
Cerebellum
Location: Hindbrain
Function: Motor control
Pons (function/shape)
Location: Hindbrain
Function: Bridge between cerebellum/rest of brain, voluntary movement regulation

Frontal lobe
“Executive” functions, planning and memory
Parietal lobe
Movement planning
Occipital lobe
Vision
Basal ganglia
Location: Forebrain
Constituents: caudate, putamen, globus pallidus unction
Function: Procedural memory, motor control. Play a role in the control and coordination of movement patterns rather than in activating the muscles to move.

Temporal lobe
Declarative memory, spatial navigation, hearing
Limbic system
Location: Forebrain
Constituents: hippocampus, amygdala, limbic cortex
Function: Memory, emotional regulation, spatial navigation

Diencephalon
Location: Brain Stem
Constituents - Hypothalamus and Thalamus

Hindbrain
Located in the brainstem. Composed of Pons, Medulla, Reticular Formation, Cerebellum

Midbrain (anatomy)
Located in the brainstem, composed of the tectum and tegmentum

Midbrain (function)
DAVE

External Anatomy

Cerebral ventricals and CSF
Cushon and bathe the brain
Cranial nerves
Communicates with structures mostly in the head and neck
Spinal nerves
Communicate between nervous system and the body
Dorsal=Sensory
Ventral=motor
Cerebral arteries
Provides blood for the brain
