what tools are used in vet tech for grooming?
brushes, dematting tools, deshedding tools, stripping tools, nail care tools
what are slicker brushes used for?
medium-long haired and curly fur
what are rake brushes used for?
thick undercoat
what do rake brushes look like?
have pins or razors on the end
what are bristle brushes used for?
short haired and smooth coats
what are pin brushes used for?
finishing/ fluffing up a dog afterwards
what are flea combs used for?
to get flea dirt out of a coat
what is flea dirt?
excretions from a flea after biting/ eating blood, will streak red since it is made of digested blood
what do the numbers mean on the clipper blades?
the higher the number, the shorter the cut will be
ex: #40 used to prep for surgery since you want the area to be naked
what clipper blades are used in vet med?
10 and 40
clippercide for hair clippers
a cleaner that is used after removing organic matter to disinfect the clipper blades, requires a contact time of 10 minutes
blade wash
a cleaner you can put into a bowl to disinfect clipper blades, have clippers running and move through the bowl
Kool lube
used for when clippers are being used for a long amount of time to cool them off when they get too hot
what is the most important thing for medicated shampoos?
contact time
what are some examples of medicated shampoos?
chlorohexidine and Benezol peroxide
why can’t you use human shampoo on animal skin?
animal skin has a different pH, more alkalinic
what is the one time when you shouldn’t dry an animal after bathing?
after doing a medicated dip
flying pig high powered dryer
very loud but gets animals (especially ones with thick coats) completely dry
what can you do to help patients cope with the loud sound of the dryer?
put 1-2 cotton balls in each of their ears to muffle the sound
cage dryers
attaches to front of their cage and blows into the cage, always supervise the whole time because animals can’t get away from it if it gets too hot
