Maturational loss

Any loss normally EXPECTED due to development processing of life
Ex: Empty-nesting, child with blanket
Situational loss

Unanticipated loss caused by an external event
Ex: fire, child death, divorce, disaster/car crash
Anticipatory loss

Loss you know that is going to happen
Ex: serious life threatening illness/ cancer

Complicated grief

Feeling of loneliness, disturbance in personal life, intense thoughts last longer than 6 months after loss
Examples of complicated grief (4)
CHRONIC- grieving longer than 6 months, reduced ability to return to normal
INHIBITED -unable to work through grief/ mourning
DELAYED- may not grieve initially, extreme grief later
EXAGGERATED-celebrity death) mourning may not correlate with degree of loss
Definition of death
Not breathing, no response to painful stimuli or lack of reflexes and spontaneous movement
Definition of good death
Allows person to die on ones own terms, with dignity and free of pain

Definition of Palliative Care
