Grey Matter Flashcards
Where does the ventral root originate?
anterior horn cells
Somatic sensations carry what?
- Touch, pain, temperature, pressure
- Proprioception from: joints, muscles
What is the Somatic motor activity function?
Innervates skeletal muscle
What is Dermatome ?
Area of skin supplied by one spinal nerve
What is the axial line ?
The places where discontinuous dermatomes meet
What is the clinical significance of dermatomes?
-In viral infection of the dorsal root ganglion of a spinal nerve
-Chickenpox virus infects dorsal root ganglia and will cause chickenpox
-Shingles
What are the exits of the spinal nerve T1- S4?
-T1- S4->through the intervertebral foramina below the corresponding vertebra
What are the exits of the first cervical nerve?
above the posterior arch of the atlas
What are the exits of the second cervical nerve?
Between the posterior arch of the atlas and the vertebral arch of the axis.
What are the exits of the fifth sacral nerve and the coccygeal nerve?
The sacral hiatus
What are the exits of the eighth cervical spinal nerve?
the intervertebral foramen above T1 vertebra
What is the central canal lined by?
ciliated simple columnar/cuboidal epithelium
What is white matter made up of ?
myelinated and non- myelinated nerve fibres and neuroglia
Where in the horns are motor neurons present?
anterior and lateral horns
Types of motor neurons in anterior grey column
alpha and gamma neurons
