Green IS & Sustainability Flashcards
Green IT, IT challenges
IT is one of the contributors of global warming (has a contribution of (2%-4%).
- Energy/Electricity consumption
- toxic waste (short lifespan of IT hardware)
- IT related overhead (eg. cooling equipment…)
Green IT, IT opportunities
- designing energy efficient chips and disk drives
2.running multiple operating systems on one server that uses a virtualization software - Reducing the energy consumption of data center
- using renewable energy in data centers
- Reducing electronic waste
what is the focus of green IT
Green IT is mainly focused on energy efficiency and equipment
utilization
What’s the focus of green IS
Green IS refers to the design, implementation, and utilization
of information systems that contribute to sustainability
Why is green IS better then Green IT?
Because green IS tackles the bigger issue and is able to target the other 98% of factors that contribute to climate change. It can make entire systems
more sustainable rather than only focusing on energy effiency.
Green IS – Examples
- using an management system to reduce transportation fees and avoid traffic which in turn minimizing energy consumption
- using information systems to track environmental information so that you were able to target areas that don’t align with being environmentally. conscious.
- motoring a firms waste and emission usage to manage them more efficiently.
Green IT vs. Green IS: Scope
Green IT: the scope is narrow and only targets energy efficiency and equipment utilization
Green IS: The scope is broad and allows you to target various problems in individuals, organizations, society.
Green IT vs. Green IS: Potential
Green IT: Low is complexity as it’s primarily technical
Green IS: High in complexity as it’s organisational an societal which is generally a more complex area to target.
The 6 pillars of SMART cities
- smart economy
- smart mobility
- smart environment
- smart living
- smart governance
- smart people
