Actions that break laws protecting the environment..
What are problems with defining green crimes? (2)
Crimes where you break the law for the environment are not universal. The definition is socially constructed.
You can harm the environment without breaking the law.
What is a contemporary example of green crime? (3)
Chernobyl in Ukraine.
It led to the spread of radioactive materials of a geographic area of thousands of miles having multiple effects on people’s health.
It also affected other countries.
What are example of green crime? (2)
Deforestation - increase in temperature, flash floods.
Dumping of toxic waste - eyesore, flytipping.
What do green criminologists do? (3)
They take a trasngressive approach which is also called zemiology - the study of harms.
White argues that there should be a clear definition of what green crime is.
But nation states and TNC’s take an antrhopocentric view which is human-centred and assumes humans have a right to exploit the resources of the plant for their own economic benefit.
What does South argue?
There are rwo types of green crime.
Primary: direct result of destruction of the Earth’s resources. Some actions are not yet illegal
Secondary: involves breaking existing laws and regulations that are considered to be illegal.

What does Potter argue?
There is environmental racism which is those suffering the worst effects of encironmental damage are those of different ethnicity from those causing the damage most often being white.
