Green box Flashcards
What is a macromolecule
The main organic molecules of living things. They are large polymers made out of smaller pieces (monomers). Examples of macromolecules are Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids
What is a monomer
One unit of a macromolecule
What are polymers
Polymers are strands of monomers
What is a lipid
A lipid is a group of organic compounds. It is made up of fatty acids. The function of a lipid is for long-term energy storage and waterproof covering.
What is a carbohydrate
Compounds made up of oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen atoms.
What is a protein
Proteins are made up of amino acids. Proteins help repair and build your body’s tissues.
What are organic molecules
Organic molecules are usually defined as compounds that contain carbon with hydrogen. (may contain additional elements as well)
What are inorganic molecules
Inorganic molecules are usually defined as compounds that do not contain carbon with hydrogen
What are nucleic acids
Nucleic acids are made up of nucleotides. Nucleic acids store and transfer genetic information in a cell.
What is an element
an element is A pure substance made of all the same kind of atom (listed on the Periodic Table of Elements)- for example, Carbon
