What is the oikos?
The household and all its members- the group that would participate in household religion

The eldest male figure- the kyrios

Protector of property and wealth
What was Zeus Herkeios responsible for?
Protecting the enclosure of the house
What was Apollo Agyeios responsible for?
Protection the house from outside the main door
What were the 2 key religious areas in a home?
The hearth and the herm
What did funerary rites consist of?
Laying out the corpse, procession with the corpse, cremation, funerary sacrifices, bones placed in grave or tomb
What were the roles of women in funerary rites?
Wash and dress the body, lament, defile themselves with ash and cutting hair (men do this too)
What were the religious roles for young girls in Athens?
Basket bearers, grinder (of meal for sacrificial cakes to Athena), foundress bear (required before marriage), washers of Athena statue

Thesmophoria, Skira, Eleusinian Mysteries, Adonia
What was the Thesmophoria?
A woman only festival to Demeter and Kore- had secret rites, important- law courts suspended and prisoners released during festival
