What different types of ancient painting techniques were used?
Fresco: water-based pigments applied to wet lime plaster. Pigments bond chemically with wall during drying process
On Panel: wax or tempra media applied to specially prepared wooden panels
On pottery: using specially-developed pigments and techniques of outline and incision
Mosaic: small stones or cubes of glass (tesserae) placed in mortar
On parchment or papyrus: Books (in the form of scrolls) sometimes preserve water based paintings. Mostly from later antiquity.
