When does the Funerary Krater originate? What does the piece provide to the context of Greek art?

A

the Geometric Period (c.900-700 BCE)
- Krater; Mixing bowl for wine and water (usually found in a symposia)
-Grave marker; provided pictorial record of funerary rituals associated with the important persons death commemorated with it.
-Artistic tendency to fill negative space w/figures, shapes, and areas of color (Horror vacuole: fear of empty space)
-For the greeks (at least for this period); the deceased entered a place of mystery and obscurity (no afterlife scenes )

When does the West Pediment (temple of Artemis) originate? What does the piece provide to the context of Greek art?

A

the Archaic Period (c.600-580 BCE)
- Provides a Hierarchy of Scale ( largest: Gorgon Medusa) also provides composite view (face and torso forwards: legs–> side profile)
- Animals flanking medusa side; Has smaller statues fitting beneath the pediment.

A

the Archaic Period (c. 540-530 BCE) (Exekias)
- Uses black-figure technique on an amphora jar= used as storage jars
-Curvature of the figures back and the v-shape of their spears emphasis the figure of the pottery.
-Attention to details; On the armor, clothing, and muscular portrayal.
- Uses ceramics to portray scenes of mythology.

When does the Red-figure amphora with Three Revelers originate? What does the piece provide to the context of Greek art?

A

the Archaic Period (c.540-530 BCE) (Euthimides)
- Uses Red figure technique which is the reverse of black figure technique.
-Figures obtain a composite pose while dancing. Potential used for a symposia.
- Has a naturalistic style; There is a greater use of fluidity and looseness that can be compared to Black-figure technique.
