- 1st built in Neolithic Era, used as natural element of defense bc of its location on high ground
- 480 BC, Acropolis razed when Persians sacked Athens
- 460 BC Pericles ordered reconstruction
- 437 BC, propylaea began construction but stopped in 432, entrance being controlled bc the city treasury was kept there
