Who are The Dorians?
were militant, disciplined people with powerful source of tribal order
- Invaded the north about 1100 BC settled in Peloponnesus, Sparta as their center
Who are the The Ionians?
had mercantile, trading society
- Some of whom had been driven across the Aegean Sea to Asia Minor
- By the eighth century B.C. two groups had mingled and become a single though highly varied culture and they called themselves Hellenes – opposed to non speaking Greek ‘barbarians’
Who were the Hellenes
They were Greek speaking people with common culture and mythology, deeply religious, democratic City-State political unit (each identified with a God)
- comprising 2 ethnic groups: Dorians and Ionians
Corinthian Order:
Used very late in Greek Architecture and is more associated with and used in Roman Architecture
- more ornate column order and has its origin in the Ionic Order
What were temples seen as by Greeks?

- symbolized perfection, set in landscape as an object
- ritual took place outside but the cult statue was housed inside.
