Polis
A city-star in Ancient Greece ex. Athens and Sparta
Assembly
A lawmaking body of government made of a group of citizens
Citizen
A person with certain rights and responsibilities in his or her country

Archipelago
A group of islands ex. Greece, Japan
Peninsula
An area of land surrounded on three sides of by water
Oracle
A sacred site (place) where gods/goddess were consulted during Ancient Greek times; any priest or priestess who spoke for the gods
Jury
A group of people who decide innocence or guilt
Hellenistic
A term that describes Greek culture after the death of Alexander the Great; the 3 main kingdoms formed by the breakup of Alexander’s empire
City-state
A city that has its own independent government and often controls much of the surrounding land ex. Athens and Sparta were city states of Greece
Agora
A public market and meeting place in ancient Greece city
Acropolis
A fortified or strengthened hill in the center of the city state ; used for protection
Parthenon
A marble temple built to honor Athena; on top of the acropolis in Athens
