Great Gatsby Symbols Flashcards
The Green Light
If it wasn’t for the mist we could see your home across the bay
you always have a green light that burns all night and the end of your dock.
Perhaps it had occurred to him that
the colossal significance of that light had vanished forever.
Now it was again
a green light on a dock.
His count of enchanted objects
had diminished by one.
Gatsby believed in the green light,
the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us.
And as I sat there brooding on the old unknown world,
I thought of Gatsby’s wonder.
The Eyes of T.J Eckleburg
The eyes of T.J Eckleburg
are blue and gigantic.
Evidently some way of an oculist
set them there to fatten his practice
Then sank down himself into eternal blindness,
or forgot them and moved away.
I followed (Tom) over a low whitewashed railroad fence
under Doctor Eckleburg’s persistent stare.
You may fool me,
but you can’t fool God!
Michaelis saw with a shock that he
was looking at the eyes of T.J Eckleburg.
