Great Expectations Part 2 Test Flashcards
is both Miss. Havisham’s laywer and Pip’s appointed guardian. He has an intimidating presence. His way of asking questions makes those around him always feel guilty and suspected of wrongdoing. In London, he’s moderately famous as a trial lawyer. People believe he’s an expert at his profession and that he is a miracle worker.
Jaggers
Has a mouth like a post-office slot. He has a direct and honest way of speaking. In the office he’s all business. At home, he relaxes and enjoys himself and his hobbies. He separates his professional and personal lives because he recognizes that Jaggers’ doings are sometimes seedy.
Wemmick
has an outgoing natural personality that Pip admires. Even when they fight in the garden, Pip respects his bravery and confidence. When they’re both older, Pip understands that he may never be successful or wealthy, but he has positive character traits that make up the difference. They become excellent friends almost immediately.
Herbert Pocket
is tutor for Drummle, Startop, and Pip. He’s educated but has never had much success in anything he’s tried. He married his wife at a young age, and they’ve had numerous children together. When he becomes flustered, he grabs his hair as if to pull himself into the air.
Matthew Pocket
Like Orlick, he is a big, lumbering kind of person. He’s slow to speak and easily provoked into a bad temper. He doesn’t like Pip, Herbert, or Startop. He was somewhat pampered when young and this has caused him to look down his nose at people.
Bentley Drummle
A minor character in the grand scheme, He is the other boarder and reader at Matthew Pocket’s home. Like Pip, he’s a student of Matthew’s. He’s the exact opposite of Bentley Drummle – friendly, good-natured, and outgoing. He becomes great friends with both Herbert and Pip. He mostly stays out of the way of Drummle.
Startop
is Estella’s mother. She is in the employment of Jaggers’ as a house servant, apparently the only one. She has a wild, fearful look in her eyes. It’s believed that she once committed a savage murder. She has the same general features as her daughter, only they’ve been hardened by years of toil and poverty.
Molly
is a very proper woman and a lady friend of Wemmick. She’s a regular guest at the castle. The aged parent enjoys her company as well. When he first meets her, Pip notes her colorful sense of fashion. It’s with her brother that Pip contracts the business arrangement for the benefit of Herbert.
Miss Skiffins
is engaged to Herbert. She is small, pretty, and dark-haired. Pip describes her as a kind of fairy. Her father lives above her and stays in a drunken stupor. At first, she doesn’t approve of Pip but eventually comes to appreciate his friendship with Herbert.
Clara
Is dark, stuffy, and only has a single skylight for seeing the outside world. The view reveals neighboring buildings. There are rough, greasy spots in the wall where people have leaned back. Strange objects, including two dirty sculptures of faces, lie on the desk and bookcase.
Jaggers’ Office
Pip’s lodging is here. It is a shabby-looking collection of houses with a small courtyard. He shares a plain set of rooms with Herbert Pocket. With his new-found money, Pip spruces the place up with new furniture, décor, and other things to give the place a homier feel.
Barnard’s Inn
Is a tiny cottage with gothic-looking doors and windows. The property includes a moat with a tiny drawbridge, a garden, a few chickens, and a small cannon that fires every night. It’s a miniature castle and almost totally self-sufficient. He lives there with his aged father.
John Wemmick’s House
After quitting Barnard’s Inn, Pip and Herbert move to here. It’s near the riverside in an out-of-the-way part of the city. Stairs lead directly to the water’s edge, making for easy travel by boat when necessary. Gates enclose every entrance, giving the place a bit of security.
The Temple
Her and her father live in Miss Whimple’s home on Mill Pond Bank in the suburbs of London. Magwitch goes into hiding in the top level of the residence. A large window looks across the river, from which he waits for a signal from Pip and Herbert.
Clara’s House
The Thames River is both a setting for the climax if the novel as well as a symbol for the inevitable passage of time. In London, several bridges and plenty of boat traffic require skilled boatmanship. In Pip’s home territory, it is the locale for the prison ships, from which Magwitch and Compeyson escape.
The River
Asmear
Dickens used this word describing smithfield. “I came into the shameful place being all ‘asmear’ with filth and fat and blood and foam.” This is describing the crime and depravity there.
