Charles Dickens biography
- 1812 born on friday 7 february at Landport suburb of Portsmouth, his father was a neighbour clerk and abas at finances so he found himself in prison for debts.
⇒ His wife and children with the exception of Charles joined him in prison and Charles meanwhile was sent to a Blacking factory (for shoes) = hard wor - 1824 february 2 father arrested for debt
- 1827 Office boy, might short hand ⇒ decides to become a journalist.
- 1824-1827 = day pupil at a school in London. At 15yo : employed as an office boy at an attorney and he started short hand (=écriture abregée.) He was haunted his whole life for what he did at factory but supported by his friend John Foster
- 1829 becomes a freelance reporter
- 1830 meets and fall in love with Maria Beadnell she was the daughter of a banker BUT Relationship with maria ended in 1833 because his parents were not thinking he was a good match
David Copperfield
But period of blanking factor ⇒ creative energy. Theme of alienation and betrayal will emerge in David Copperfield (++ autobiographical job) especially and in GE
Dickens bio 1835…
- 1835 = engaged to Catherin Hogarth & 1836 = marries her
-1837 wrote Oliver Twist until 1839.
-1842 travels through canada and US American Notes appears in October creating a furor in America. (Because at that time ++ slavery & children work (a lot died))
→ He advocated abolition of slavery and it costed his life. At that time Childrenworked and they were exploited = slavery at home.
⇒ BUT it tarnished his reputation because he criticised america too much
- 1845 Debut of his amateur theatrical company. The cricket and the hearth published. Returns to England in July
=> visual aspects of descriptions, he writes as a theatre director, not just as a novelist.

- 1860 His family takes up residence at Gads Hill. Burns many personal letters. GReat expectation begins to appr Weekly. He doesn’t feel good mentally
- 1861 Embarks on yet another series of public readings in London. GE finishes in August
Dick remains on contact with public, understand their motivations = the reason of his great success. Proximity with people, with any people, with those who could be and those who cannot. ⇒ is popular because he addresses to people. He addresses also the lower classes even if focuses on higher classes. He writes on all classes. But the ocre of his interest is on the working classes because it is where he came from.
++ public readings 1865-1870
- 1870 His final public things take place in London Suffers a stroke on June 8 at Gad’s Hill after a full day . Died on June 9 and is buried at Westminster Abbey on June 14. Last of his works published in September.

→ the episode of the factory for him = explains emphasis on money, poverty.. = some of the most important things in GE.
→ relationship with parents = money etc has a role on the pov you have on your parents.
→ Rambling through the city : his love for London. accuracy of the description and the way he is loving him through his descriptions. This love for London = ++ powerful.
→ Sentimental attitude to childhood : he is drawing abruptly into adulthood. Childhood = blessing state of innocence and cheer happy.

when you tend to attribute feelings or thoughts to a writer, an author etc & sometimes project on him your own ideas = illusion that you know what is going on inside the writer’s mind
