Grassland biomes Flashcards
How many types of grasslands are there? What are they?
There are two types of grasslands:
. Temperate
. Tropical
Why are grasslands a key biome?
They are vital to humans and other species as a source of grains which are staple foods.
Why are grasslands important biomes to humans? (refer to grains)
They are the main biome that are most suitable for grain produce
. Because grains are staple foods, meaning that we eat them frequently, we look out for grasslands
. Grains love temperate areas, grasslands love temperate climate zones
. Because grains are grown and harvested for us to use in our everyday lives
. Humans have adapted grassland to improve crop yields
Why are grains important?
Firstly, grains are staple foods meaning that they are a big food source for our energy and nutritional needs. They provide us with fertilisers which are used in crop yields to increase the quality and quantity of productivity. They are also used to make everyday goods like fuel, beer, oils and cosmetics. They are also a food source for animals.
What is a grassland?
Grasslands are biomes dominated by grass and may have small, widely spaced trees or no trees.
What percentage of the world is covered by grasslands?
they once occupies 42%, but now they make up about 25%
3 Facts on grassland biomes include:
- Grasslands are also one of the most endangered environments
- Grasslands often depend on fire to germinate their seeds and generate new plant growth.
- Grasslands are the most useful biome for agriculture because the soils are generally deep and fertile.
Can grasslands cope with animal grazing? How?
Grasslands can cope with animal grazing because their grasses growth points are low and close to the soil, so they can continue to grow even when they are continually grazed by animals. Because grasses are fast-growing plants, they can support a high density of grazing animals and can regenerate quickly
By 2050 the worlds human population will rise to 10 billion. If we are now struggling to feed the 8 billion we have now, how can we future generations sustain grassland productivity?
To accommodate the increase
in size and amount of farms to grow crops and graze animals, biomes were altered to
meet the higher production demands. In general, the focus of agriculture is to modify
water, climate, soils, land and crops.
