Q

What is a line graph?

A

A line graph is a type of graph useful in displaying data/information that changes continuously over time (continuous data). The points on the graph are connected by a line. Where the X axis and Y axis cross is the origin of the graph.

Q

What is a histogram?

A

Histograms are used to represent continuous data, or a range of data. Bars touch, but the Y axis and the first bar do not.

Q

What is a bar graph?

A

A bar graph is used to represent categories or grouped data; it provides a visual representation of categorical data. The categories appear along the horizontal axis (X axis) and the bars do not touch each other and there is a gap between the first bar and the Y axis. Bars spaces and widths must be the same length!!!!

Q

What is a pie graph?

A

A pie graph is a type of graph in which a circle is divided into sectors that each represents a proportion of a whole. A bar graph and a pie chart go hand in hand.
REMEMBER:
-represent each part as a portion of 360 degrees.
-Formula: number/total x 360 = degrees
-Use a protractor to draw the different segments.

Q

Name the five rules for drawing graphs.

A
  1. The line graph has two axes, X and Y.
  2. Determine the dependent and independent variables.
  3. Choose a sensible scale for each axis.
  4. Both axes must be fully labelled!
  5. Provide the graph with a complete heading. Always start heading with β€œa ……. graph showing…”

Q

What are graphs useful for?

A

Recording and communicating information. It can be used to give large amounts of information in away that is easy to understand, look at quickly and remember.

Q

How do you know which is which, independent and dependent variable?

A

The independent variable is the variable that you the scientist change to see what happens. The dependent variable is the variable which changes because of the changes that you made with the independent variable.
