Ecology Flashcards
What is ecology?
The study of living things and their relationship with one another and the environment
What are living things called
Biotic factors
What are non living things called
Abiotic factors
Way to remember: A- is “not” in english or in art an Asymmetrical drawing is not symmetrical
What do Biotic and Abiotic factors contribute to?
They contribute to the physical and chemical environment
Species:
A group of individuals that look similar and are able to interbreed and produce fertile offspring
A species can be identified if two individuals can breed and produce offspring
If a horse and a donkey were to breed they would produce a mule as offspring, mules are infertile because their “parents” are of different species.
For two different species ti interbreed they have to be kinda similar like have similar structures, diets etc. Like a lion and springbok cant breed because they are too different.
Is a mule fertile? (Able to breed)
No
Organism:
Single organism
Population:
A group of individuals of the SAME species living in a defined area (a pride of lions is one population)
Community:
All the populations of organisms that INTERACT in a certain area.. (E.g. a pride of lions and zebras in a grass land; a parrot, panther and tropical moth in a rain forest 🌳)
Ecosystem:
How the communities interact with the non-living things in their environment. (E.g. soil, trees and water)
