Graphs Flashcards
Learn the purpose, analysing and advantages and disadvantages of each graphing type.
Bipolar Analysis Purpose (1)
used to compare areas, people or gathered data (questionnaire)
Bipolar Analysis Advantages (2)
- a large amount of data can be plotted in a relatively small space
- patterns can be identified quickly and easily
Bipolar Analysis Disadvantages (2)
- the results are based on peoples perceptions which may be biased
- the technique can only be used for two or three areas otherwise the map will become cluttered and confusing
Dispersion Diagrams Purpose (1)
to display the main patterns in the distribution of data
Dispersion Diagram Advantage (5)
- shows the spread from the mean
- is easily understood
- gives an indication of the reliability of the data
- can compare graphs easily
- anomalies can be shown
Dispersion Diagram Disadvantages (3)
- data must be in a form that can be placed along a numbered line
- works best with lots of data
- the standard deviation can easily be manipulated and can be biased
Kite Diagrams Purpose (1)
displays the density and distribution of plant and animal species
Kite Diagrams Advantages(3)
- useful for displaying changes over distance
- visually clear and easy to distinguish one category from another
- comparisons can easily be made
Kite Diagrams Disadvantages (3)
- visually subjective as the scale influences the visual effect
- only works for a specific range of data
- time consuming to construct by hand
Logarithmic Graphs Purpose (1)
used when the values are so large that they cant be shown on a linear graph
Logarithmic Graphs Advantages (3)
- useful for studying data that change exponentially
- can display a much larger range of data
- allow comparison between trends in small and large values
Logarithmic Graphs Disadvantages (3)
- zero cant be plotted
- positive and negative values cannot be plotted on same graph
- can be difficult to plot values accurately
Polar Graphs Purpose (1)
shows direction and magnitude
Polar Graphs Advantages (4)
- useful when one variable is directional
- lots of data can be put on one graph and compared
- visual
- can compare multiple sets of data
Polar Graphs Disadvantages (3)
- only useful with limited type of data
- hard to make suitable scale
- can distort higher values making them difficult to interpret
