Graphs Flashcards
What are dispersion graphs?
Data is plotted on a vertical scale using dots to show values.
When should you use dispersion graphs?
To show the range of values for a single set of data.
What are the strengths of using dispersion graphs?
Compare sets of data.
Gives exact data: can easily calculate range; interquartile range and median.
What are the weaknesses of using dispersion graphs?
Limited data used
What are triangular graphs?
data is plotted on three axes.
When should you use triangular graphs?
To show percentage data that has been divided into three but totals 100%.
What are the strengths of using triangular graphs?
Shows the division of a total when there are three variables.
Shows large data sets (clustering)
Clearly shows patterns/anomalies
What are the weaknesses of using triangular graphs?
Must be percentage data and total 100%
What are climate graphs?
a line and bar graph. Line= average monthly temperature. Bar = average monthly precipitation (rainfall).
When should you use a climate graph?
To compare climates/change over time.
How would you describe a climate graph (rainfall)
Distribution: evenly/unevenly spread
Give the maximum and minimum - which month does it occur in?
Range
Total annual rainfall (add all the rainfall together).
How would you describe a climate graph (temperature)
Distribution/max/min and range
Average temperature
Northern hemisphere (warmest in summer) or southern hemisphere (warmest in winter).
Is there a link between temp. and rainfall?
What are population pyramids?
Bar chart showing the % of the total population in each 5 year age group
When should you use population pyramids?
To show population structure
How would you describe population pyramids?
Birth rate: the wider the base the higher the birth rate.
Death rate: straight sides = low; pyramid = high.
Life expectancy: taller the pyramid the higher the life expectancy.
Dependency ratio: dependents ÷independents. Base is widest (0-15)= youthful population/high dependency ratio. Top is widest (65+)= ageing population/high dependency ratio.
