Q

What are the strengths of using dispersion graphs?

A

Compare sets of data.

Gives exact data: can easily calculate range; interquartile range and median.

Q

What are the strengths of using triangular graphs?

A

Shows the division of a total when there are three variables.
Shows large data sets (clustering)
Clearly shows patterns/anomalies

Q

What are climate graphs?

A

a line and bar graph. Line= average monthly temperature. Bar = average monthly precipitation (rainfall).

Q

How would you describe a climate graph (rainfall)

A

Distribution: evenly/unevenly spread
Give the maximum and minimum - which month does it occur in?
Range
Total annual rainfall (add all the rainfall together).

Q

How would you describe a climate graph (temperature)

A

Distribution/max/min and range
Average temperature
Northern hemisphere (warmest in summer) or southern hemisphere (warmest in winter).
Is there a link between temp. and rainfall?

15
Q

How would you describe population pyramids?

A

Birth rate: the wider the base the higher the birth rate.
Death rate: straight sides = low; pyramid = high.
Life expectancy: taller the pyramid the higher the life expectancy.
Dependency ratio: dependents ÷independents. Base is widest (0-15)= youthful population/high dependency ratio. Top is widest (65+)= ageing population/high dependency ratio.

Q

What are histograms with equal class intervals?

A

columns for a range of data, area of bar shows frequency, bars do touch.

17
Q

When should you use histograms with equal class intervals?

A

When data is sorted into ranges ,Height of each bar shows total in each range - the frequency. Continuous data.

18
Q

What are the strengths of using histograms with equal class intervals?

A

Good for large data sets as can be grouped

19
Q

What are the weaknesses of using histograms with equal class intervals?

A

Cannot read exact values as data is grouped into categories (number of values within an interval are not actual values)
Can only be used for numerical/ continuous data.
Difficult to compare multiple histograms.
