Graphology
The study of written and printed symbols and of writing systems.
Punctuation
The marks (.(),!) used in writing.
Heavy/Light punctuation
The use of more/less punctuation.
Parenthesis
Round brackets () used to mark off words/phrases.
Ellipsis
A set of dots (…) indicating a pause/ a cliffhanger.
Asterisk
A symbol (*) used as a pointer to an annotation/footnote.
Inverted commas
To indicate speech (“”).
Semantic nuance
Slight differences in meaning of similar meaning words (e.g. home/house).
Artwork
Illustrations, photographs and non textual materials.
Illustrations
A picture illustrating a book, newspaper, etc.
Images
A representation of the external form of a person/thing in art.
Charts
A sheet of information in the form of a table, graph or diagram.
Diagrams
A simplified drawing showing the appearance, structure, or working of something; a schematic representation.
Logos
A symbol or other small designs adopted by an organisation to identify its products, uniforms,vehicles, etc.
Signs
A notice on public display that gives information/ instructions in a written/ symbolic form.
Photographs
A picture made using a camera, in which an image is focused on to light-sensitive material and then made visible and permanent by chemical treatment, or stored digitally.
Layout
Organisation of the text to guide the reader.
Columns
A vertical division of a page or text.
Paragraphs
A distinct section of a piece of writing, usually dealing with a single theme/ indicated by a new line, indentation or numbering.
Headings
A title at the head of a page/ section of a book.
Captions
A title/ brief explanation accompanying an illustration, cartoon.
Spacing
The amount is of space between successive words/ letters (e.g. The dog is happy- spacing for emphasis).
Spelling
A process/ activity of writing/ naming the letters of a word.
Archaic
Very old or old-fashioned/ no longer in everyday use (e.g. thou, wast, methinks or forsooth).
