What is a grant?
A way of securing funding
An award of money for a specific amount, time and reason
- Government or Private
> Research
> Educational
> Training
> Programatic
It is a competitive process
Where can you find grants?
The internet (www.grants.gov)
Various charitable donors
- Wealth individuals
- Organizations
> Veterans of Foreign Wars
> Ladies League of Alabama
> Rotary Clubs
Types of grants that impact OT
Start a program
- The most comprehensive and difficult to get
Supplement an existing program
- Add diversity, additional dx, enlarge the area
Purchase equipment for a program
- sensory room
Purchase equipment for clients
- ambucs bikes
How do you go about getting a grant?
Competitive process
Know the criteria
- Varies from grant to grant
- Know what the Grantor is giving the money for
> Don’t apply if it doesn’t fit
Let everyone know what you are doing
Follow directions in the RFP (request for proposals)
Proof read, proof read and get several people to proof read!
- Use terminology similar to the that in the RFP
Parts of a grant
- Cover letter
- Abstract or executive summary
- Description of program (grant narrative)
- Goals for the program
- Operational plans
- Financial plans
- Marketing plan
- Supplemental materials
What is included in the cover letter of a grant?
One page
Signed by highest person, even if that person is not doing the actual grant
- You might be writing the grant, but have your administrator sign the cover letter
What is included in the abstract or executive summary of a grant?
Who, what, when , where and how much
Broad, not a step by stem
Usually about 2 pages
What is included in the description of program (grant narrative) of a grant?
Background information (evidence based)
Problem statement
Theoretical foundation (more evidence)
Goals (may be addressed in another area)
Implementation plan (may be in another area)
Timeline (maybe in another area or document alone)
Evaluation plan (may be separate document)
Dissemination plan
- Who will you report too at the end
What is included in the goals for the program of a grant?
These are not individual
Can be broad and not necessarily measurable
Objectives (usually part of the program evaluation), need to be specific
What is included in the operational plans of a grant?
Space, personnel, supplies ect
What is included in the financial plans of a grant?
How the money will be used
Budget
How much you want, other sources if any
Don’t use “miscellaneous or other”
What is included in the marketing plans of a grant?
How will people know about you
What is included in the supplemental materials of a grant?
Anything that will help your cause, but not bore
If they say don’t send supplemental items then DON”T
- Floor plans
- Your resume’
- Statistics or articles that support your need
