Grant Flashcards
What was the aim of the study?
- Test the effect of noise as a source of context on studying & retrieving material
Identify 3 features of Grant’s sample?
- 39 participants (17 F)
- 17 to 56 years old
- Opportunity sample = 8 found 5 more
What method was used?
What design was used?
Method = Experiment
Design = Independent Measures design
What was the IV & the DV?
IV = whether study/test conditions matched/mismatched
DV = Recall (short answer test)
= Retrieval (multiple choice test)
What was the background noise?
Tape made in the uni cafeteria = hum of conversation & sounds of chairs & dishes
How was the procedure standardised?
Both conditions wore headphones
How long was the break between reading the article & the test
2 minutes
How many question are in the short answer test & multiple choice test
Short answer test = 10 questions
Multiple choice test = 16 questions
What were Grant’s results?
On Saturday morning I felt like 6 crisps but I ate 7. In the evening I felt like 5 but only ate 4.
On Monday morning I felt like 14 crisps but I ate 3. In the evening I felt like 12 but only ate 7
What were Grant’s 2 conclusions?
- No independent effect of noise on performance therefore there is no effect of noise on the capacity to study
- Context dependence affects retrieval in both SAQ & MCQ tests = study in silence as exams are silent
