Grammatical Changes that happened in the 1600’s Flashcards
Nouns
Many nouns came to be used as verbs: rain, thunder, chair
Other than those related specifically to gender—became neuter or neutral.
Verbs
The verb “do” became auxillary—meaning that some verbs always needed this verb with them in order to be correct
The verb ending “-s” replaced the “th” ending. So it became “she speaks!” instead of “she speaketh!”
Pronouns
The “thou” and “you” distinction disappeared. This was the original English formal/informal pronoun with “you” being used in formal situations and “thou” being used in more informal intimate situations.
The word “its” as a possessive pronoun “the dog licked its paws” and the use of “it’s” as a contraction came into use: It’s time to go”.
Double Negative
The double negative was considered incorrect
Graphology
Graphology became more standardized to Late Modern English or Present Day English
Grammar/Lexical Changes
English became more reliant on word order and endings to indicate tense rather than inflection.
