Burner's Theories Flashcards
Language Acquisition Support System (LASS)
Made by Jerome Bruner, built on Chomsky’s theory. Believed supported the idea of a predisposition to learn language, however triggered by the environment(LAD triggered)
Scaffolding
A form of linguistic support, adults provide the child with conversational material and patterning
Proto-conversations
A basic form of scaffolding before the child can function as an effective producer of language; could include non-verbal responses.
Framing
Controlling the agenda of the conversation, or making utterances and allowing the child to fill in the blanks
Recasting
The rephrasing and extending of a child’s utterance
Child Directed Speech (CDS)
Used to facilitate children’s language development. Form of adapted language where the adult needs the child to learn language by making their input accessible to the child. This can include Simplification, Prosodics(tone/pitch/length of pause), Emphasis, Audience participation(plural pronoun use, tag questions, frequent questions)
